Glebe Community Development Project

Established in March 2004, the Glebe Community Development Project is a partnership between the University of Sydney's Faculty of Education and Social Work and the NSW Department of Housing Central Sydney Division. The project aims to strengthen the Glebe community by working with residents, local business, government departments and community organisations to address issues of local concern.

The Project over the past three years has successfully developed a number of key projects that build community capacity and strengthen the social housing community of Glebe. To browse some of these projects, select the 'community initiatives' option from the menu on your left.

Achieving our aim...

In achieving our aim, our role is to;

  • Facilitate mechanisms for more effective communication across stakeholders
  • Support community groups to develop relationships and partnerships that can add value to the community
  • Work with, and through, exisiting groups to achieve change
  • Develop new initiatives based on community need
  • Support residents to participate in decisions that affect their lives and their community
  • Increase residents participation in a range of community activities and decrease social isolation
  • Provide a range of information to residents and services

Based at Glebe Town Hall, the Project employs a fulltime coordinator who has the assistance of social work students undertaking their practice requirements whilst studying for their social work degree.  Students are based with the Project from April to November and can be seen working alongside residents and services undertaking community devleopment and capacity building intiatives.

In 2007 the Project has begun working with Faculty staff and local agencies to involve USYD education students in a range of intiatives that support children's and young people's education in Glebe.
