The ProgramThe program begins with a comprehensive Orientation to
the program and the University of Sydney. During this time, the Visiting Scholars
will become familiar with the University campus, libraries and educational facilities,
meet the program coordinators, and receive information about the timetable of
activities for the program. The first phase of the program is a
4-week Intensive English course
with a focus on oral and written communication in the Sciences. Intensive English
seminars continue through the rest of the program. The second phase
of the program, the Science Education course, begins after a 1-week orientation
to the faculties of Science and Education. The Science Education CourseThe
course consists of the following parts: Issues
and research in science teaching and learning - Research including students'
approaches to learning, curriculum development, assessment strategies and the
needs of undergraduate learners. Practicum
- Observation and practice of a wide range of teaching and learning strategies
and situations in science. Occasional Seminar Series - Application of contemporary teaching practices common
to the teaching of all the sciences.
Science Discipline Seminars
- Application of contemporary practices specific to the individual
sciences.
Many of these courses have an on-line learning component available
through WebCT.
